General Regulations for Salmon Fishing in Finland

Minimum Sizes:

  • In most areas, the minimum size for salmon is 60 cm.
  • In the northern Bothnian Bay (north of 63°30' N latitude), the minimum size is 50 cm. (See map below)

Closed Seasons:

  • In rivers and streams, a closed season for salmon applies from September 1 to November 30.

Catch Limits:

  • Recreational anglers may catch up to two salmon per day.

Specific Regulations for Salmon Fishing in the Gulf of Bothnia (ICES Divisions 29, 30, and 31)

Catch Limit:

  • One marked salmon (adipose fin clipped) per angler per day is allowed.
  • After catching this one salmon, fishing must stop for the rest of the day.

Landing Rules:

  • All fish must be landed whole and unprocessed directly from the fishing vessel.
    This means gutting, filleting, or processing onboard is not allowed. This rule ensures better monitoring and traceability.

Special Rule for Northern Areas:

  • From May 1 to August 31, in areas north of 59°30' N latitude (see map), within four nautical miles from the baseline:
    • Both marked and unmarked salmon may be caught.
    • A maximum of two salmon per angler per day applies according to national regulations.

Regulations for the Gulf of Finland

Catch Limit:

  • In the Gulf of Finland, anglers may catch two salmon per day, regardless of marking status.

No Seasonal Restrictions:

  • There are no specific closed seasons for salmon fishing in this area.

Important Additional Information for Anglers

1. Required Fishing Permits: All anglers between 18 and 64 years must pay the national fisheries management fee (Kalastonhoitomaksu):

  • €6 per day
  • €16 per week
  • €45 per year
    Additional local permits may be required depending on method and location.

2. Special Regulations for the Tornio River (Tornionjoki):

  • Fishing season runs from June 8 (12:00 noon) to August 25.
  • Closed every Sunday 7:00 PM to Monday 7:00 PM.
  • Minimum size: 50 cm
  • Catch limit: One salmon per angler per 24 hours
  • All catches must be logged in the official catch record.
  • Closed season: September 15 to December 15

3. Current Catch Restrictions for the Baltic Sea:

  • Recreational fishing is limited to one marked (adipose fin clipped) salmon per day.
  • After catching one marked salmon, fishing must stop for the rest of the day.
