Finland is world-famous for its breathtaking nature, but beneath the water's surface, something is brewing that takes even seasoned pros' breaths away. While many think of the Elbe or Dutch canals when it comes to Zander (Walleye's bigger cousin), Finland has quietly become the absolute hotspot for trophy-sized fish.

In recent years, Finland has dominated the headlines of the angling world. If you thought a 10kg Zander was the pinnacle, think again. In Finland's nutrient-rich waters, fish are reaching almost mythical proportions:The
15kg Monster: An absolute outlier that tipped the scales at an incredible 15.03 kg. Truly a fish from another world! (Source: BLINKER)
The 14.9kg Mark: This giant further proves that Finland has what it takes to be a world-record destination. (Source: FISCH & FANG)
Consistency at the Top: Numerous reports of record-breaking Zander show that these are not fluke catches, but the result of a healthy and booming population. (Source: FISCH & FANG)
National Record: 15.300 kg (103 cm!) from 2021
Why Zander Populations are Exploding
A decisive factor for this phenomenal development is the warming water temperatures. The Zander, known as a thermophilic (warmth-loving) species, has benefited massively from the climate changes of recent years.
In the era of Livescope and high-end sonar, you might think you don't stand a chance without a screen in front of your face. Finland proves the opposite. The fish density is often so high that "reading the water" the old-fashioned way still leads to massive success.
Our guide Viggo is the perfect example. In the winding archipelago around Turku, he often deliberately goes without sonar. He knows the current edges, hidden weed beds, and deep gullies like the back of his hand. His results speak for themselves: beautiful Zander regularly land in his net—caught with intuition and decades of experience.
ViggoWhen packing your bags, keep these three regions at the top of your list:
Region | Characteristics |
Central Finland | The heart of the country. Massive lake systems with endless drop-offs—perfect for classic jigging. |
Southern Lake District | Nutrient-rich, slightly murky lakes. Zander love this "soup" and are extremely active here. |
Northern Lake District | Untouched nature and hard-fighting fish. The new frontier for Zander pioneers. |
Insider Tip: Southern Finland is a true underdog. The combination of Baltic brackish water and deep inland lakes offers incredible variety and early-season bites.
Finland's deep lakes are true treasure chests, but they require ethical angling. Zander are extremely sensitive to pressure changes (barotrauma).
Crucial Advice: Fish caught from depths of more than 10 meters often cannot compensate for the rapid pressure change during the fight. Their swim bladder expands, which almost always leads to fatal internal injuries.
A Zander pulled from such depths rarely survives being released. If you plan on practicing "Catch & Release" or want to be selective about what you keep for the kitchen, please stick to shallower areas under 10m!
