The Silver of the Baltic

The Sea Trout (Salmo trutta trutta), known in Finnish as Meritaimen, is the anadromous form of the Brown Trout. It spends most of its life in the brackish waters of the Baltic Sea and only ascends the gravelly rivers of its birth to spawn — a fascinating life cycle between sea and river.

In Finland, the Sea Trout is the quintessential coastal fish. Its preferred habitat is the so-called leopard ground — shallow coastal sections with mixed substrate of sand and stones, where shrimp and small schooling fish gather. Here it patrols in knee-deep water, often just metres from the shore.

Sea Trout fishing has its own tradition in Finland: night fishing at dusk and during the brief summer nights. In Finland's white nights, when the sun barely dips below the horizon, Sea Trout hunt especially aggressively in shallow water. A silver torpedo that strikes out of nowhere into the fly — once you've experienced that, you're hooked on Sea Trout for life.

Seasonal Data

The Sea Trout shows two activity peaks: the coastal season in summer and the river ascent in autumn. In midsummer, catch probability along the coast is at its highest.

Diet Spectrum

At sea, the Sea Trout feeds mainly on schooling fish. During the autumn river ascent, feeding ceases almost entirely.

Growth by Age

Sea Trout grow significantly faster in the sea than Brown Trout. After 2-3 years in freshwater they migrate to the sea and gain weight rapidly.

Habitat Requirements

Water Temperature

5 — 15 °C

Prefers cool coastal water. In summer found at current edges and inlets with fresh water.

Salinity

Brackwater 5 — 15 ‰

Lives in the brackwater of the Baltic. Tolerates both fresh and saltwater thanks to its anadromous lifestyle.

Coastal Structure

Leopard ground (sand/stone)

Prefers mixed substrate of sand and stones — the so-called leopard ground. This is where prey fish concentrate.

Current

Moderate current

Seeks spots with current that carries food. Headlands, reefs and inlets are hotspots.

Spawning Habitat

Gravelly rivers

Ascends gravelly rivers to spawn. Needs clean, flow-through gravel beds for egg deposition.

Water Depth

0.5 — 3 m coast

Hunts in shallow coastal water, often only knee-deep. Especially close to shore at dusk and night.

Fishing Techniques for Sea Trout in Finland

The Sea Trout is a challenging target that demands endurance and precision. It hunts in shallow coastal water and reacts sensitively to disturbances — quiet wading and long casts are essential.

Coastal spin fishing with slim spoons and coastal crankbaits is the most popular method. Fly fishing along the coast with shrimp and baitfish imitations is considered the most elegant approach. Trolling from a boat takes the largest specimens that hold in deeper water.

🎣

Coastal Spin Fishing

Apr — Oct

Slim spoons (12-18g) and coastal crankbaits. Wade fishing on shallow beaches with leopard ground. The most popular method for Sea Trout.

🪶

Coastal Fly Fishing

May — Sep

Shrimp and baitfish streamers with single-handed or light two-handed rod. Shooting heads for maximum casting distance in the wind.

🚤

Trolling

Jun — Sep

Trolling from a boat at 3-10m depth. Crankbaits and spoons on downriggers. For the big, deep-holding silver fish.

Where to Catch Sea Trout in Finland

Finland's best Sea Trout coastlines are along the west coast and around the archipelago areas. Wherever leopard ground meets current.

Bothnian Coast

63.5°N, 22.0°E

Finland's finest Sea Trout

The flat west coast of Ostrobothnia offers kilometres of leopard-ground beaches. Sea Trout over 5 kg are regularly caught here. The best spots are at headlands and river mouths.

Average size: Ø 45 — 65 cm

Hanko / Southern Finland

59.8°N, 22.9°E

Southernmost spots

The Hanko peninsula is Finland's southernmost point and offers excellent coastal fishing. Rocky coastline alternates with sandy bays. Early season from April possible.

Average size: Ø 40 — 55 cm

Åland Islands

60.1°N, 19.9°E

Brackwater giants

The archipelago between Finland and Sweden is a hotspot for trophy trout. The many islands and shallows provide perfect hunting grounds. This is where the trophies over 8 kg are caught.

Average size: Ø 50 — 70 cm

Kvarken Archipelago

63.1°N, 21.2°E

UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site

The continuously rising archipelago near Vaasa belongs to the UNESCO World Natural Heritage. Shallow bays and new islands create ideal Sea Trout habitat. A unique nature experience.

Adipose Fin — Wild or Stocked?

The adipose fin rule applies to Sea Trout in Finland as well. If you catch a Sea Trout with an intact adipose fin, it is a wild fish that must be released in many waters. Stocked fish without an adipose fin may be harvested, provided the minimum size is met. The minimum size is 50 cm with adipose fin and 60 cm without adipose fin.

Tip: Check the adipose fin carefully before harvesting. When in doubt, always release and ask your guide.

Conservation & Sustainability

The wild Sea Trout is classified as 'critically endangered' in Finland. Natural populations have declined dramatically due to river engineering, migration barriers and overfishing. Many spawning rivers are dammed or destroyed. Strict closed seasons in rivers (September–November), high minimum sizes and the adipose fin regulation aim to protect the remaining wild stocks. At FISHERMANS-LODGE, we exclusively work with partners who practise sustainable Sea Trout fishing and actively contribute to the conservation of this unique species.
