Silmäsjärvi is our private lake nestled in the subarctic forest of Kittilä, Lapland, approximately 1.2 km long and 700 m wide. Sitting at 204 m elevation and surrounded by sparse, low-growing Arctic forest, this pristine body of water offers complete exclusivity — no other properties, no public access, just pure silence and untouched nature. A short boat ride from the shore brings you to our Lakeside Cabin "Topi," where the lake becomes your private playground for swimming, fishing, sauna, and relaxation under the Midnight Sun or Northern Lights.

Silmäsjärvi offers authentic fishing opportunities across every season, each with its own character and techniques. Summer fishing (May–October) As the ice melts and the lake opens up, Silmäsjärvi becomes accessible by boat and from shore. The cold, clear Arctic waters support healthy populations of northern pike, European perch, and whitefish— species typical of pristine Lapland lakes. Trolling from the boat is effective for covering water and targeting larger pike, while casting lures near weed beds and submerged structures produces perch and pike. The long days of the Midnight Sun season extend fishing well into the late evening hours, when fish are often most active. After a successful day on the water, your catch can be prepared over an open fire or back at the lodge in traditional Finnish style. Winter ice fishing (December–April) Once the lake freezes — typically by early December and lasting until April — ice fishing becomes the only method, and it is one of the most beloved Finnish winter traditions. The ice grows thick enough (often 50 cm or more) for safe walking, and even snowmobile access. The technique is simple yet meditative: drill a hole through the ice with a motorized or hand auger, set up a small stool, and drop a baited line or small jig lure into the dark water below. Jigging motions mimic small prey, attracting perch, whitefish, pike, and burbot up from the depths. Experienced ice fishermen will often drill multiple holes across the lake, moving systematically until they find where the fish are schooling. The silence of the frozen lake, the crisp Arctic air, and the patience of waiting for a bite create a uniquely peaceful winter experience. A warm campfire or kota nearby, with hot drinks and the chance to cook your catch on the ice, completes this authentic Lapland adventure. Whether summer or winter, fishing at Silmäsjärvi is more than just catching fish — it is about connecting with the rhythm of Arctic nature in a place that is entirely yours.
