When the river season ends in late August, the focus shifts to Lapland’s small forest lakes. September is a short but rewarding window: cooling water, fewer anglers, and trout and grayling feeding hard in preparation for the long winter ahead. Fishing is done mainly from a boat, allowing quiet movement along shorelines, drop-offs, and feeding lanes. Dry flies and nymphs are the primary tools, with fish often rising confidently in the crisp autumn air. Streamers come into play when conditions call for it, especially as light levels drop and fish become more aggressive. These are relaxed day trips, starting from your accommodation in the Saariselkä, Ivalo, or Inari area. Expect unhurried fishing, clean water, autumn colors, and a feeling that the season isn’t quite ready to let go yet.
