Trolling in Finland: One of the Most Effective Methods for Big Predators

Anyone who wants to experience the full diversity of fishing in Finland should definitely try trolling, also known as “drift fishing behind a boat.” While in Germany fishing with multiple rods is heavily restricted or even prohibited, this method is a core part of Finnish angling culture. Many anglers use large boats with ten, twelve, or even fifteen rods to target trophy predators.

What Makes Trolling So Special
In trolling, the lure is pulled behind the boat—an extremely efficient technique for systematically covering large areas of water. Trolling is particularly effective in the expansive open waters of Finland’s lakes. In summer, large pike, zander, and salmon can be found in open water, feeding on schools of fish. These areas are ideal for trolling and allow anglers to fish wide areas very effectively.

Finland offers perfect conditions for this: from open coastal and archipelago regions to clear inland waters and massive lakes like Saimaa or Päijänne. Pike, zander, landlocked salmon, and various trout species are among the most sought-after target fish.

The Right Equipment for Successful Trolling
Successful trolling requires robust equipment that can withstand heavy use. This includes a large boat, multiple rod holders, stiff rods with multiplier reels, side planers, downriggers, and a modern fish finder with depth chart. Wobbler lures are commonly used, but spoons and soft plastics also produce regular bites. Lures are usually trolled 8–12 meters behind the boat, adjusted according to depth and target species.

Important: In most cases, an additional fishing license is required if you want to troll with more than one rod—your host can provide guidance on this.

Why Large Lakes Are Ideal for Trolling
Finland’s expansive lakes make trolling much easier. Using multiple rods requires plenty of space—especially when changing direction. Finland provides optimal conditions: low boat traffic, clear structures, and large, deep basins where predators frequently gather. The open lakes also offer ample room to fish open-water zones where predators move freely.

Maximize Success with a Guide
Beginners will benefit greatly from hiring an experienced guide. Professional guides know the waters, provide the boat and all equipment, and know which lures work best on a given day. This greatly increases the chances of success and allows anglers to learn trolling techniques in Finland directly from the pros.
