Cities and tourist regions
Tampere is the urban centre of Pirkanmaa. The city lies between Näsijärvi and Pyhäjärvi, connected by the Tammerkoski rapids. Jyväskylä, on the northern shore of Lake Päijänne, is the centre of Central Finland. Hämeenlinna in Kanta-Häme and Lahti on Lake Vesijärvi complete this travel region in the south. The term ‘Central Finland’ encompasses several interconnected travel regions here and is not limited to the administrative region of Central Finland.
What makes Central Finland so special?
Tampere’s industrial history is evident along the Tammerkoski rapids. Today, the city is also known as the ‘sauna capital’; there are many public saunas by the water throughout the region. In Jyväskylä and the surrounding area, numerous buildings designed by Alvar Aalto characterise the cityscape. Surrounding both cities are extensive lake landscapes with fishing grounds for pike, perch and zander. Universities, museums and cafés make it easy to combine days of fishing with cultural activities.
Places of interest
In Tampere, the cathedral, featuring paintings by Hugo Simberg, and Särkänniemi complement a stay on Lake Näsijärvi. The Serlachius Museums are in Mänttä and make a day trip into the wider region. In Hämeenlinna, Häme Castle and Aulanko are worth a visit. Around Jyväskylä, Petäjävesi Old Church and the Oravivuori survey point belong to separate UNESCO World Heritage listings. Since 2026, the Aalto Works listing has also included buildings such as Säynätsalo Town Hall and the Muuratsalo Experimental House.
Scenic highlights
Lakes, islands and wooded hills characterise Central Finland. Lake Päijänne links the Jyväskylä region with the more southerly lake district around Lahti; its bays and islands can be explored on boat and canoe trips. Around Tampere, the shores of Lake Näsijärvi and Lake Pyhäjärvi alternate with wooded areas. Seitseminen and Helvetinjärvi offer walking trails through forests, moors and rocky landscapes.
The region’s waters
Näsijärvi, Pyhäjärvi, Päijänne and Keitele offer a variety of fishing grounds for pike, perch and zander. Those who prefer flowing waters can find out more about the fishing stretches at Tammerkoski in Tampere or at Kuokkalankoski in Lempäälä. Separate permits and conditions apply to such stretches. When visiting the Leivonmäki, South Konnevesi, Pyhä-Häkki and Salamajärvi National Parks, choose your fishing waters based on the relevant park and area information; not every forest lake is open for fishing.
Getting there
Flights: Check current connections to Tampere-Pirkkala and Jyväskylä for your travel dates. Helsinki-Vantaa offers another option for getting there, followed by a train or bus journey; when booking, please check whether the connection is by flight or bus.
Train/car: Tampere is easily accessible from Helsinki. Allow for a longer journey time for Jyväskylä and more remote lakes; check the route to your accommodation.
On site: Choose a starting point near your planned fishing waters. Distances between towns, lakes and national parks vary considerably; check the final leg of your journey to your accommodation or the jetty.
Flora and fauna
Forests, reed-lined shores and lakes provide habitats for waterbirds, ospreys and woodland animals. Pike, perch and zander are among the well-known fish species found in the larger lakes. The vegetation varies between coniferous forests, birch groves and riparian vegetation. Binoculars are well worth taking on nature walks; observe animals from a distance and keep breeding sites clear.
Activities
Boat fishing on the larger lakes can be combined with canoeing, hiking and sauna visits. On Lake Päijänne, seasonal excursion boats offer further opportunities to view the landscape from the water.
