From the coast to the interior
The Bothnian Bay is lined with flat coastal landscapes and harbour towns. Further inland, forests, moors and lakes alternate. Lake Oulujärvi forms a large landscape area in Kainuu, whilst the Kuusamo region features more pronounced river valleys and hills. Oulu is a starting point for coastal excursions, Kajaani for the Oulujärvi area, and Kuusamo for the landscapes of Koillismaa.
Lakes and coastal fishing areas
Suitable areas of lakes and coastal waters are ideal for pike and perch fishing. On Lake Oulujärvi, the boat route, wind conditions and distance from your accommodation are important factors to consider when planning. Along the coast, shallow bays differ from more open stretches of water. Check the fishing area with a local operator and compare what equipment or guidance is included.
Rivers in the region
The Oulujoki, Iijoki, Kalajoki and the rivers around Kuusamo have different sections and fish stocks. Check the target fish species and permitted fishing methods for the specific stretch. For migratory trout and salmon, particular attention must be paid to licences, closed seasons and protected stocks.
Culture in Oulu and Kainuu
Oulu combines maritime heritage with a vibrant city life. In Kainuu, traditions centred on the Kalevala play an important role; Kajaani and Kuhmo offer different cultural points of interest in this regard. Kuusamo is primarily a starting point for nature and winter sports trips. You should check the latest programmes for events and museum visits.
Trips at any time of year
Long summer days are ideal for walks and canoe trips along suitable routes. In autumn, the landscape changes colour during the Ruska. In winter, snow-based activities are added to the programme, depending on the weather and snow conditions. Guided wildlife spotting tours and winter evening excursions are also available, depending on the location and season.
Getting there and distances
Oulu, Kajaani and Kuusamo offer various ways to get there. Check the current flight connections, road routes or train and bus services for your chosen destination. Accommodation by the water may be situated away from the main transport routes. You should therefore also consider the journey to the fishing area and any overnight stops along the way.
Choose a fishing holiday
Discover the offers currently listed on FISHERMANS-LODGE and choose the part of the Oulu region that suits your trip. A coastal stay near Oulu is different from a fishing holiday on Lake Oulujärvi or in Kuusamo. The location, season and services offered by the provider will help you make your decision.
