About this resort

About the Resort
Lomatärppi is a family-run holiday village right on the banks of the Tenojoki (Deatnu) – one of Europe's last free-flowing major rivers. Ten luxurious, modern holiday cottages are spread generously across the grounds, each with a cozy fireplace lounge, private sauna, and a terrace overlooking the river and surrounding fells. The resort is run by Travel Utsjoki, a family of Sámi reindeer herders who offer tours, guiding and tailor-made fishing packages in the region year-round – in winter, two reindeer even graze right on the property.

Location & Surroundings
Utsjoki is Finland's northernmost municipality, set deep in the Tenojoki valley wilderness and just a short walk from the village (2.4 km, with marked trails passing right by). Norway is literally minutes away across the Sámi Bridge, and the Barents Sea is about an hour's drive. The nearest airports are Ivalo…

Fishing on site

The water

The Tenojoki – one of Europe's last major free-flowing rivers – runs right past the property. A boat is available on site, and the shoreline (around 800 m away) is reached via a private access path. Several small, untouched wilderness lakes (1.5–3.7 km away) are also within easy walking distance.

Local fishing

The Tenojoki and its surroundings offer fishing for pike, Arctic char, grayling, salmon and even sea trout – whether by fly or spinning gear, whatever you prefer. Do note that salmon fishing on the Tenojoki itself is currently closed to protect Atlantic salmon stocks; anglers still hoping to land a salmon will find excellent conditions in the Utsjoki river, where pink salmon run upstream every two years (years: '27, '29, '31...). The surrounding rivers and lakes offer great fishing opportunities too, though separate licenses apply there — just get in touch with us beforehand and we'll help you sort out the right permits. Daily permits for all species are easy to obtain right on site. The best activity depends on the season: from March to April, ice fishing on the remote wilderness lakes is the highlight; from June to August, fly and spin fishing take center stage on both lakes and rivers — and for something truly different, this is also the time to head out to the Barents Sea for king crab fishing with traps.

Arrival & times

Lomatärppi sits right on the Tenojoki, in Aittisuvanto, just about 2.4 km from Utsjoki village (an easy walk along marked trails). The nearest airports are Ivalo in Finland (roughly 2–2.5 hours by car) and Kirkenes in Norway (roughly 2.5 hours by car, along a scenic route hugging the Arctic Ocean coastline) – from either, onward travel is by taxi, scheduled bus (from Ivalo only, roughly 2–3 hours), or rental car. If driving yourself, Utsjoki is reached via the E75/North Calotte Route through Lapland – expect around 6–7 hours from Rovaniemi – with the Norwegian border just a few minutes away across the Sámi Bridge. An airport transfer to Lomatärppi can be arranged directly with the resort.
